ABOUT THE ITEM
Hedi is one of the most controversial and influential designers of the last 2.5 decades.
Controversial, because at the beginning of the 21st century the quality, appeal, and androgyny of his designs were absolutely unparalleled in mainstream fashion. However, as time passed and his fame grew, his designs not only lost those great attributes but also seemed to become redundant and stagnant (in my opinion, of course).
Influential, because Hedi Slimane revolutionized the look of the male model and reignited an international interest in moving menswear from a moribund boxy suit, to a close-to-the-body and alluring silhouette. He is the reason why tight jeans left the skatepark and took over the runway, and why fitted tailoring was of interest to men (and women) again.
This piece is part of one of my favorite Dior Homme collections. It is a lightweight semi-lined zippered high-neck vest in a luxurious woven cotton that appears as lightly waxed given the sheen of the fabric. The garment is partially lined on the sides with the same beautiful cotton, it has Riri zippers, and two hidden pockets on either side.
The construction of this piece is totally artisanal, and it’s creation took place in France. Something which later Dior Homme garments would lose for the most part.
